My Girl By Paul Johnson-Jovanovic

Her name was Isabella. I had lived across the road from her for fifteen years, admiring her from afar. She was my perfect girl: Long, dark hair like gossamer, deep brown eyes, high cheekbones with a Cleopatra curve. Not heavy on the makeup. There was no need; she was beautiful without it. The way her face would brighten as even the faintest ghost of a smile would touch her lips. To me, indeed, she was perfection. Untouchable. But I still thought of her as my girl.

My girl.

She was always nice to me, polite. She would give me a wave every morning as she walked up the drive to her car. Even though I didn’t start my shift until ten in the morning, I would leave early just so I could exchange early-morning pleasantries with her. It meant a lot to me, that wave.

Boyfriends used to come and go. Always the same: tall, dark, handsome types with flashy cars and attitude. What the fuck she ever saw in any of them, I’ll never know. Maybe she was one of these girls that were attracted to the badboy-types, liked being treated like shit. The mind boggles.

I hated them, every single one of them. Why? Because they got to kiss her, to hold her, to make love to her, that’s why. What I would have given to steal just one kiss from her. To have felt her moist lips press against mine. It would have been heaven, sheer bliss.

Now, I don’t want you getting the idea that I was some kind of stalker, some kind of weirdo that followed her everywhere she went. It was never like that. I knew that if she had caught me following her then any chance I had – as small as it was – would have gone forever. Besides, I would have scared the crap out of her by following her around, I’m sure. No, best to admire from afar and hope that she came to her senses, that she would eventually fall for me.

Did she ever give me a second thought? Me – spotty, overweight and not particularly attractive. I doubt it. But I could dream, couldn’t I? I could fantasize that one day she would be mine. No one could ever deny me that. To me, she was my girl. Always was.

My girl.

I’m forty-seven-years-old now. I still work at the same place. I’m still single. Still overweight. The spots have gone though, so I suppose I should be thankful for that, huh?

Isabella got married about twelve years ago. She moved to the other side of town. A few years later she had her first child, quickly followed by another. I hope she was happy. I hope he treated her well, I really do. She deserved to be treated right.

Her life went on, and so did mine. Occasionally I would catch glimpses of her around town, pushing her kids about in a pram. Then later, when they were older, walking with them.
